Councilman Larry Brown Councilman Larry Brown was named Elected Official of the Year at a recent Nevada League of Cities and Municipalities Conference in Winnemucca, NV. David Fraser, executive director of the Nevada League of Cities, will attend the Wednesday, Oct. 17 City Council meeting to present a trophy to the councilman. “It is very exciting to be honored by a group such as the Nevada League of Cities and Municipalities, “said Councilman Larry Brown. “To be acknowledged by your peers for providing good service to the community is truly an honor.” Councilman Brown has served as a Las Vegas city councilman representing Ward 4 since 1997. Prior to his appointment to the City Council, he served as the director of Public Services for the Las Vegas Valley Water District. In addition to serving on the NLC Board of Directors, he has also been chosen by his fellow council members to serve on a number of boards including those of the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, the Clean Water Coalition, and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Councilman Brown also serves as chairman of the Clark County Regional Flood Control District. The Nevada League of Cities and Municipalities has 25 member agencies and provides legislative and research services, group insurance benefits program, training programs, workshops and conferences. The Public Official of the Year program started in 1979. City of Las Vegas council members also won the award in 1981 and 1996. Councilman Brown shares the honor this year with North Las Vegas City Councilwoman Stephanie S. Smith. # # # |
Councilwoman Stephanie S. Smith North Las Vegas City Councilwoman Stephanie S. Smith was named Public Official of the Year by the Nevada League of Cities and Municipalities on Saturday, Sept. 22, during the organization's 48th Annual Conference held in Winnemucca, NV. Smith shares the honor with Las Vegas Councilman Larry Brown. Smith was nominated for the honor by her fellow Councilman-Mayor Pro Tem William Robinson. Robinson praised her effectiveness as an advocate of both the Nevada organization and the National League of Cities. He lauded her for her 2007 efforts to bring local issues to state legislators, including concerns regarding initiative petitions such as the elimination of franchise fees and the loss of public right-of-way management. Smith was elected in 2002 to be the League's Secretary/Treasurer. She became the League's 2nd Vice President in 2003 and 1st Vice President in 2004. She became League's President in 2005. The League, which includes 25 cities and municipalities, coordinates legislative activities among local governments and assists in providing its members insurance, communications, training opportunities, newsletters and legislative updates. Smith, a music teacher in the Clark County School District, was elected to the City Council in 1007 and since then has served on a number of government boards and committees, including the Governor's Maternal and Child Health Board and the Southern Nevada Planning Coalition. ### |
